With continuing problems with the stereotype handstamps and the development of synthetic vinyl substitutes for rubber, vinyl handstamps were inaugurated at the start of the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1958. Families of vinyl styles changed with changes both in the contractor making them and in government specifications. All are of ten subjects, 2 by 5. Beginning with 827, all vinyl styles show 2-letter state abbreviation without period.
